Approximately 62% People in USA Invest in Stock Market
As of 2024, approximately 62% of American adults have investments in the stock market, either directly through individual stocks or indirectly via mutual funds and retirement accounts. This marks an increase from 58% in 2022. Given the U.S. adult population of about 260 million, this equates to roughly 161 million individuals participating in the stock market.
Stock ownership in the U.S. varies significantly across different demographic groups. For instance, 87% of upper-income Americans own stocks, compared to 65% of middle-income and 25% of lower-income individuals. Additionally, racial disparities exist: in 2022, 61% of White families owned stock, whereas only 34% of Black and 24% of Hispanic families did.
The primary avenue for stock ownership is through retirement accounts, with 54% of American families holding such accounts in 2022. Direct ownership of individual stocks is less common, with only 21% of families owning shares directly.
These statistics highlight the widespread participation in the stock market among Americans, while also underscoring the disparities in investment across different income levels and racial groups.
